Deep Creek Residency Winner 2023

We are so excited to announce ALISON K RICHARDS as the winning recipient of the 2023 Deep Creek Residency Fellowship.

The judges said “We were thrilled by the breadth of form and subject matter that this shortlist represented, including visceral poetry, literary non-fiction, and an elegant novella. It was a pleasure to read stories embedded in Australian landscapes, stories with powerful First Nations voices, and stories that offered glimpses into vivid imagined worlds.

The winning manuscript, however, was chosen for its singular voice and perspective, and its well-realised creative vision and exceptional characterisation. Unanimously, the judges felt that this manuscript, in particular, was one that they wanted to continue reading.

The judges also wish to make special mention of the submission by Laura Kelly, and hope to read more of Laura’s work in the future.” Matilda Bookshop.

“It’s a testament to Alison’s persistence and growth as a writer to see the phenomenal transformation of this manuscript in just twelve months. It’s gone from an interesting premise threaded with deeply personal experience, to opening pages you just don’t want to put down.” Bronwyn Tilley, Operations Manager at Writers SA

“I’m so very appreciative for the support of Matilda Bookshop, Writers SA, Ultimo Press, Grass Tree Gully and Pip Williams for this year’s Deep Creek Residency. As an emerging writer it can be difficult to persevere and maintain self-belief, but thankfully for all of us who had the courage to enter, this reading and writing community stands by our side.” Alison K Richards

‘It is a privilege to mentor a talented writer during the creation of a new work. I’m so looking forward to meeting Alison and getting to know her and her story.’ Pip Williams, Author.

‘It is exciting to be able to support new work from emerging Australian writing talent, we’re so pleased to work with the team at Matilda on the Deep Creek Residency and can’t wait to read Alison’s manuscript-in-progress’ Robert Watkins, Ultimo Press Publishing Director

We want to thank everyone who entered for sharing their work!
