Voice is often cited as the quality that makes good writing stand out from the crowd, but what is a writing voice and how are we supposed to find it? Join Jennifer Mills to discover your voice and how to define it.

This workshop with Jennifer Mills will give you strategies and techniques to develop your writing craft, bringing out specific qualities in your writing voice. Structured activities and games will help you to unlock your creativity and give you permission to explore different aspects of voice and style.

We will work from dialogue and found text to explore character and register and engage mood and setting to identify aspects of voice. We will look at ways to counter outside influence and play to your unique strengths as a writer while building the confidence to expand your practice beyond the comfort zone.

This workshop is aimed at fiction writers but will also be useful for other genres and all levels of experience, whether you are just getting started or looking to hone your craft.

Participants will:

  • Look closely at the elements of a writing voice including style, mood and register
  • Explore the relationship between point of view, character and voice
  • Experiment with dialogue and found text
  • Learn some techniques to bring out your unique strengths as a writer
  • Build confidence in experimenting with limitations and taking risks with voice
