Discover the wonder of voice in fiction writing, what is it and why do we need it?

Voice is one of the most mysterious and most vital elements of fiction with publishers often putting out the call for 'distinctive voices'. It's related to character and style; it determines mood and tone; it influences plot and structure; and it often seems to spring from somewhere deep inside the writer. So how can fiction-writers better understand voice - how might we follow its impulses, control it when necessary, and use it to craft better fiction?

In this three-hour workshop, participants will explore the intention behind writing voice, unpack some short examples by a varied range of writers and work on discovering your unique and original voice and encourage it to come out on the page, whatever your genre or form.

Participants will:

  • Recognise the mechanics of voice in existing works of fiction
  • Read your own drafts for voice and enhance what you've written
  • Appreciate how voice is linked to elements such as mood and tone
  • Experiment and play with new approaches to voice
  • Create a plan for redrafting with voice in mind

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned writer, this workshop is perfect for you. Come prepared to write and discuss and learn how to use voice to craft.
