Change to Kill Your Darlings

Kill Your Darlings is thrilled to announce exciting plans for 2017, including a transition to digital-only publishing, an expansion in content, and two inaugural awards for early-career writers.

From 1 January 2017, KYD will become a digital-only publisher. The April 2017 edition will be the last print magazine produced.

Publishing directors and co-founders, Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent, have made the following statement:

‘This is a big change for KYD, and while we have loved producing our beautiful books, we see it as the beginning of a bold new phase for our enterprise. We have published the writing of more than 400 extraordinary Australian writers since our first print edition in March 2010, and now we look forward to publishing even more content, to a wider, larger and more diverse audience in Australia and abroad.’

From 2017, KYD plans to publish twice as many Australian writers than previous years on our redesigned website, increasing the scope and range of content, and better connecting readers and contributors.

2017 will also see the expansion of the KYD Writers’ Workshop, where we will continue our Melbourne program alongside new events interstate and in regional centres. KYD will continue to engage communities of readers and writers via the KYD Podcast, the monthly KYD First Book Club, and additional events in collaboration with Australia’s premier arts festivals.

KYD is also delighted to announce the following inaugural awards:

KYD Unpublished Manuscript Award – $5000
This award, which includes a cash prize of $5000 and a mentorship with KYD‘s Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent, will assist an early-career author in the development of their manuscript. The award is open to unpublished writers of adult fiction and adult non-fiction.

KYD New Critic Award – $4000
This award will assist the vocational development of an early-career critic, and comprises a cash prize of $4000, the commissioning of regular writing for KYD, and a mentorship with senior editorial staff.
