Money for Romance

adelaide writerA huge CONGRATULATIONS to our Admin Assistant, Sarah Gates, who received the Colin Thiele Writing Scholarship from Carclew recently, of $12,500. We’re very proud of her and her writing achievements and we’re excited for this wonderful step in her career.

‘Winning this scholarship is incredibly exciting. It means that I have the time and support to write my first romance novel, with the guidance of the wonderful Harlequin author, Victoria Purman, and with an opportunity to pitch to publishers and agents in August. I feel like it’s the first big step in my career as an author. Basically, I can’t stop grinning or thinking about all the great things to come,’ said Sarah.

On why she believes she won:
‘I think I won because of my involvement with the SA Writers Centre. I’ve attended just about every workshop and event possible and really thrown myself at every professional opportunity that has come my way. It has done wonders for my professional development and networking and kept me informed of all the competitions, grants and other opportunities that I’ve grabbed onto with both hands – all strengths that I’m sure played a part in this success.’

Sarah will be working on a romance novel, with mentor Victoria Purman, who has published three books with Harlequin.

‘I chose Victoria because she is massively successful, well respected and industry savvy. She worked as a journalist before turning her eye to novels, so she has a vast array of writing experience to offer. She’s also extremely kind, generous and fun. I have no doubt she’ll whip my writing into shape by the Romance Writers of Australia conference in August.’
