Writers SA and Matilda Bookshop are so excited to announce REBECCA BURTON as this year’s winner of the Deep Creek Residency which includes mentoring with Rachael Mead and an assessment by Ultimo Press.
“This year’s highly impressive shortlist included a diversity of voices and forms, including resonant writing about migrant experiences in Australia, an evocative retelling of a first century tale, prismatic memoirs, and dynamic, dialogue-riven fiction.
The judges were immediately transported, however, by the winning submission, Winter in Cairo by Rebecca Burton. There was a deft touch to the writing, which made for a highly pleasurable reading experience. Clear-eyed storytelling, in tandem with an arresting premise, a beautifully realised setting, and the nuanced portrayal of complex relationships, saw us unanimously wanting to read more of this work.” Judging panel, Matilda Bookshop.
“I can’t think of another opportunity like this in Australia, let alone South Australia, and I am thrilled and so grateful to be named as this year’s winner. Writing can be a tricky and uncertain process, but I am hopeful that the residency will take me one step closer towards publication of this manuscript.” Rebecca Burton
“Every year we say we were amazed by the diversity and depth of the stories, and the talent of SA authors, and this year is no different. Writers pour their hearts and souls and tears into the stories they tell and we’re so thrilled to help get a few that one step closer to publication through this residency partnership.” Bronwyn Tilley, Writers SA
