Food can act as a metaphor in storytelling, whether it be about growing up, representing class, gender and race or anchoring a story in place.

In this tasty online food writing workshop with award-winning writer and arts critic Olivia De Zilva you will explore the importance of food as a device in fictional and autobiographical genres. During the session Olivia will also dig into life writing and unpack how food can shape the way we write about ourselves.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to write about food in the context of the five senses (taste, touch, sight, smell and hearing)
  • Uncover the power of food through close readings/viewings of iconic food scenes in literature/film/TV/music
  • Brainstorm the ways in which food has influenced your life so far and how to write about these
  • Work though prompts and exercise that will help you in writing about your own life through food
  • Connect with other like-minded writers.

This workshop is presented by the Writers SA No Limits: Young Regional Writers program, however all ages and locations are very welcome to attend this online workshop.
