Discover the power of flash fiction — small stories with big impact! Join Jacqui Davies as she explores ways to write with precision, craft powerful openings and endings and have fun experimenting with words. For ages 13-17.
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the joy and power in writing succinct stories, the form’s potential to explore deeper feelings and societal issues, its ability to extract a powerful emotional response in the reader, and its relevance to the modern digital age. After sharing examples of successful stories, participants will have the opportunity to create their own flash story.
Participants will learn:
- The three key concepts of flash fiction
- How to identify examples of these concepts and how they work within the story
- The basic triangular structure of a flash story
- How to create their own flash fiction story using the Story Planner worksheet provided
This workshop is only open to young people aged 13-17. Young people under 16 must have parental permission to attend.

About Jacqui Davis
Jacqui Davies is a writer of short stories, flash fiction and book reviews whose work has appeared in a number of Australian magazines and anthologies including Womankind, Books+Publishing and the Wirra Wirra Anthology. She draws inspiration from the magnificent beaches, lakes, volcanoes and sinkholes of South Australia's Limestone Coast, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. She holds a degree in Creative Writing from Flinders University.
