Are you looking for professional support and a strong peer network to turn your finished manuscript into a pitch-ready product for publication? Writers SA’s Manuscript Incubator program will guide you through the process of self-editing and structural rewrites to make your story shine.

This exclusive program is designed for writers with a finished first draft. Selected applicants will gather fortnightly over four months with Lee for a rigorous and supported development experience. You will have access to high quality Writers SA workshops, a fortnightly writing group for support and critiques, professional feedback, career consultations with an industry expert, and more.

Manuscript Incubator provides the space, skills, guidance and knowledge you need to refine your manuscript into a publishable, marketable product. Each fortnightly session with Lee will be a combination of theory and discussion, with writers expected to be actively working on their manuscripts in between. 

Fortnightly sessions outline:

Session 1 - digging in deep into the emotional truth of your work

Session 2 - revising beginnings to establish tension

Session 3 - deepening characters and characterisation part 1

Session 4 - deepening characters and characterisation part 2

Session 5 - revising dialogue

Session 6 - deepening sense of place

Session 7 - line-by-line revision

session 8 - writing your synopsis

By the end of the program you should be ready to query agents and submit to publishers in the new year, or even be thinking about self-publishing. 

This program is most suited to people writing any genre of fiction or memoir and narrative nonfiction of novella or novel length (upwards of 40,000 words). 

 

Manuscript Incubator with Lee Kofman includes:

  • Eight fortnightly group meetings (dates are below) 
  • Access to a wide selection of workshops with 6 credits to use across Writers SA's online and in person events. (T&Cs apply)
  • One in-depth consultation about your writing project with a Writers SA staff member
  • An expert critical reading of your first three chapters (max 10,000 words)
  • One Work Space writing intensive day
  • Access to a private online space to share work and ideas with your peers.

Meeting dates: Wednesdays 7pm to 8pm (Adelaide time), March 29, April 12 & 26, May 10 & 24, June 7 & 21, July 5. 


 

About Lee Kofman

Dr Lee Kofman is a Russian-born, Israeli-Australian author of three fiction books and two memoirs, including Imperfect (Affirm Press, 2019), which was shortlisted for Nib Literary Award, and The Dangerous Bride (Melbourne University Press, 2014), co-editor of Rebellious Daughters (Ventura Press, 2016) and editor of Split (Ventura Press, 2019), which was longlisted for ABIA Awards – anthologies of memoir by prominent Australian authors. Her short works have been widely published in Australia, US, UK, Scotland, Israel and Canada; her blog was a finalist for Best Australian Blogs 2014. Lee’s new book, The Writer Laid Bare (Ventura Press), is out in 2022.

Once you have been offered a place in Manuscript Incubator you will be asked to formally register and pay your participant fee via this portal. 

This program will be held online via Zoom. Instructions will be emailed to you, please be sure to check your spam folder.

*Payment plans are available to members for this program with a $300 deposit and fortnightly payments of $150. Please email [email protected] to discuss options.

—Writers SA members must be logged in to receive the member discount. If you are a member of another state based writers centre, please contact [email protected] at least five working days before the program commencement date to get a code for the member price. Our staff don’t work full time and we don’t want you to miss out!

 

Program Terms and Conditions

-The six workshops refer to both digital and in-person sessions and include: 3 1.5-hour workshops, two 3-hour workshops and one 6-hour workshop. The workshops may be selected of your choice or by recommendation from Writers SA. You must use these credits in 2023. Outstanding credits will not be held over. These cannot be exchanged for any other service or refunded. There will be a maximum of two credit-holders at each event until a minimum number of paid participants is reached and will be on a first-come-first-served basis after emailing [email protected] to lodge your request. If the workshop is at capacity for credit-holders, you can opt to pay for the workshop or join a wait-list until the event reaches the minimum number of paid participants.

-In depth consultations and First Feedback will be carried out by a relevant staff member of Writers SA (not by Lee Kofman)
