Join speculative fiction author and academic Lisa L. Hannett to craft wondrous and well-informed tales about Vikings and the early medieval world. *This event will now be delivered via Zoom and recorded*

When we think of Vikings, several familiar images spring to mind: fearless, axe-wielding warriors; sleek longships sailing to distant shores; helmets (often horned) crowning blond heads; relentless raiding and plundering. As bold as they are brutal, these Vikings stir the imagination, inspiring awe and fear in equal measure. They are the stuff of legend. But what were Vikings really like? Not just Valhalla-seeking warriors but the proud women, rich farmers, poor slaves, and clever children? How did these people live, travel, and tell tales?

In this session, Lisa Hannett will share her knowledge on all things Vikings and explore how fiction and non-fiction writers alike can draw on history, myths, sagas and archaeological finds to weave wondrous and well-informed stories about Vikings and their early medieval world.

Participants will learn about:

  • Viking Age life: fact and fiction
  • Tips for fiction and creative nonfiction writing
  • Where to research early medieval people and places
  • Weaving myth and legend to form more authentic narratives

Suitable for writers at all levels of experience, especially those interested in medieval, historical, time travel and fantasy.
