Voiceworks is a national literary journal that features exciting new writing and art by young Australians. Their purpose is to create a space for people under twenty-five to develop their creative and editorial skills and to publish, and be paid for, their fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and comics.

Voiceworks is published by Express Media, a not-for-profit organisation that provides support and development opportunities for young people in the literary arts. You can find out more about other Express Media programs at expressmedia.org.au.

Voiceworks #128 Grain features young South Australian artists including cover design by Tyberius Larking (19), illustration by Emma Hough Hobbs (25), and visual art by Mia Guerrieri (24) and Dean Plesa (22). Writers performing their work at the launch include Megan Koch (24), who will be reading from their short fiction piece ‘Tonsil Jar’, a foray into friendship and formaldehyde at a music festival, j.s.n (23), whose short story ‘We Are the Tide’ details the journey of two lovers to a private beach against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic future, Sudhashree Somers (23), whose essay ‘Ableism at Work’ critiques the inaccessibility of employment schemes for autistic people, and Helen Karakulak (23), who offers insight into the editorial process at Voiceworks and the experience of being a young writer in South Australia.

Voiceworks Launch: Grain (Issue 128) is presented by Writers SA, Voiceworks and Express Media in collaboration as part of the No Limits program.

About No Limits

Our project No Limits: Young Regional Writers supports literary activities in the regions, and creates industry pathways for young regional writers, from skills to publication. The project supports coordinators in three regional SA locations (Riverland, Eyre Peninsula and Limestone Coast), employs diverse authors to present skills-based writing workshops, commissions new literary work by young regional writers, connects young writers with publishers and industry representatives, and presents performance events and literary showcases in regional venues for communities of readers and writers. With events delivered in-person and online, young regional writers are connected with professional peers and audiences from around Australia. This project is supported by Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative, and Arts South Australia.
