Writing memoir allows us to share our stories, whether big, life altering events or small mundane moments. Join writer, poet and playwright, Lur Alghurabi as she guides you through traditional and experimental forms, stopping along the way to discuss the challenges and possibilities.

Participants will learn:

  • The basics of style, convention and form in memoir writing, from traditional to experimental
  • How to navigate the challenges of memoir writing such as different versions of the event, imperfect memory, or the impact it has on the writers’ personal community.
  • Craft points: narrator, reliability, tension, voice
  • What’s possible with experimental forms and mediums of memoir
  • What publication opportunities exist for memoir

 

This workshop is presented by the Writers SA No Limits: Young Regional Writers program, and is aimed at regional writers under 30, however writers all ages and locations are very welcome to attend.

 


 

About LUR ALGHURABI

LUR ALGHURABI is an Iraqi and Australian writer, poet and playwright. She is winner of the AM Heath Prize for Prose and the Scribe Nonfiction Prize, and shortlistee of the Deborah Cass Prize. Her work has been widely published in Australia and the US including fine print magazine, LitHub, the Lifted Brow, Scum Mag, Kill Your Darlings, Right Now, Going Down Swinging and Meanjin. Lur is a recent alumna of the Oxford University Master's in Creative Writing with Distinction, and outgoing Director of the National Young Writers’ Festival. She is working on her first book of personal essays.

No Limits workshops are heavily subsidised for regional writers aged 30 and under.
