Join Miles Franklin longlisted author Briohny Doyle to explore literary speculation and strengthen your writing across fiction, non-fiction and hybrid forms.

Rather than simply designating a genre, the speculative can be understood as an operation of literary imagination. In this session comprised of short reading and writing exercises, we will cultivate speculative reading and writing practices across fiction, non-fiction and hybrid forms. This might mean attending to the temporally unstable, spectral, uncanny, or, through conjunctive movements such as 'what if?' 'then what?' 'and also', using literary imagination to attend to contemporary life and its multiple horizons.

Participants will:

  • Consider various texts that use speculation to develop their story
  • Think critically about what constitutes the speculative in literature, both in fiction and non-fiction
  • Consider what kinds of literary speculation they are already practicing
  • Use creative techniques to develop speculative thinking.

Suitable for writers of non-fiction, fiction and hybrid forms ready to deepen their practice.
