In this in-person workshop, you’ll consider and evolve techniques to convey a vivid, powerful sense of place no matter where or when your stories are set.

There’s so much we can do with words when writing about settings, place or context, and it can make or break the reader’s experience of your short story, memoir or novel. Too brief descriptions can short-change your reader and their experience of it when what you want to do is draw them in so they feel connected, like they’re standing in the room right next to your characters. Too much loose prose and they lose interest.

Join author and short story writer Denise Picton to explore how to bring place to life in your own writing through a series of group discussions, writing examples, and exercises.

Participants will learn:

  • How established writers have brought a sense of place into their writing
  • How to help a reader ‘see’ the context for your story and what it means for your characters
  • How to describe place as if it is a character
  • The importance of place for your current writing work.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who writes. It will be informal and friendly to foster connection and exploration. You are welcome to engage in whatever way makes you feel comfortable.
