Labels, Pronouns and Beyond: Writing Queer

with Mag Merilees

A safe place to explore the challenges and pitfalls of writing queer lives (whether you're gay, straight or in between). Everything from profound questions of identity, to avoidance of the token gay brother, to the nitty gritty of pronoun-use. Join Mag Merrilees for a fun and frank practical session.

Participants will learn about:

  1. Ease with the ever-changing terminology
  2. Identity - do we choose or are we chosen?
  3. Tiptoeing through the pronoun minefield.
  4. If it's queer does it have to have to be about sex?
  5. A deeper understanding of sexuality and gender

Margaret (Mag) Merrilees’s latest novel ‘Big Rough Stones’ was published by Wakefield Press in 2018. It is the back-story, in novel form, of some of the characters from ‘Fables Queer & Familiar’ (Wakefield Press 2014, illustrated by Chia Moan). The ‘Fables’ started out as an online serial and were also broadcast as a radio serial.

Mag’s debut novel ‘The First Week’, won the Wakefield Press Unpublished Manuscript Award at Adelaide Writers’ Week and was then shortlisted for the Barbara Jefferis Award, a NSW Premier’s Award and the Onkaparinga People’s Choice Award.

Margaret’s short work has appeared in Meanjin, Griffith Review and Island. See for details.
