Fantasy with a Dark Edge

Are your daydreams filled with strange creatures, otherworldly characters, and haunting locales? Are your notebooks scribbled thick with ideas about odd magic, twisted tales, or “what ifs” that lead the imagination down weird and wonderful paths? Aimed at new and emerging writers, this workshop highlights the nuts and bolts of writing dark fantasy fiction, offering relevant tips, exercises, and inspiration for novelists and short story writers alike. This half-day course will equip you with tools like world-building, characterisation, plotting, and research for the most unusual, enchanting, and unsettling Fantasy stories.


Participants will learn:

  2. Beginners' toolkit for writing dark fantasy
  3. Writing exercises and prompts
  4. Editing tips
  5. Information about publication opportunities


Lisa L. Hannett has had over 70 short stories appear in venues including Clarkesworld, Weird Tales, Apex, The Dark and in Year’s Best anthologies in Australia, Canada and the US. She has won four Aurealis Awards, including Best Collection for her first book, Bluegrass Symphony, which was also nominated for a World Fantasy Award. Her first novel, Lament for the Afterlife, won the Australian National Science Fiction award for Best Novel in 2016. A new collection of short stories, Little Digs, is coming out in August 2019.
