Anatomy of a Book

Description:

with Jennifer Mills

Do you have an idea for a novel, but don’t know where to begin? Started to write, and stalled because you can’t see how to proceed?

This full day workshop with one of Australia’s finest fiction writers will help you learn the practical skills you need in the early stages of a book: approaching that daunting first draft, developing voice and character, understanding structure and planning, and making your writing practice sustainable.

Participants will learn:

  • How to approach your first draft
  • Understanding the relationship between voice and character
  • Mapping narrative structures
  • When and how to plan a novel
  • How to sustain your practice through a long work of fiction

Jennifer Mills’ latest novel, Dyschronia, is published by Picador. She is also the author of the novels Gone and The Diamond Anchor, and the short story collection The Rest is Weight. In 2012 Mills was named a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelist and in 2014 she received the Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship from the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. From 2012-2018 she was the fiction editor at Overland.

Venue: Writers SA Offices, First Floor of the Institute Building, State Library SA, Corner of Kintore Avenue and North Terrace
