Turning Life into Great Short Stories - Ceduna

with Rebekah Clarkson

FREE for members

as part of our Regional Writers Project

Flannery O’Conner famously once said: ‘Nothing more needs to happen in a writer’s life once they’ve reached twenty, they will have enough material for stories to last a lifetime.’ But how can you mine your own life and experiences to create a work of compelling fiction?

Join acclaimed and award-winning contemporary short story writer Rebekah Clarkson as she guides you through a range of exercises to unearth the brilliant stories that can be triggered from your own life.

Come and learn how to write what you ‘don’t know’, how to ask the ‘what if?’ question, and why your subconscious mind is so important in creative process.  The workshop will also cover a range of craft techniques specifically targeted toward the short story, such as point of view, showing and telling, language and voice.

Rebekah Clarkson is a fiction writer, editor, mentor, sessional academic and teacher of creative writing. Her novel-in-stories, Barking Dogs (Affirm Press), is set in Mount Barker, South Australia and has been widely acclaimed. Her short stories have appeared in journals such as Griffith Review, Best Australian Stories, Australian Book Review and Something Special, Something Rare: Outstanding Short Stories by Australian Women (Black Inc.). Her stories have been recognised in major awards in Australia and overseas, including the ABR Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize, Fish Publishing Short Story Prize and Glimmer Train’s Fiction Open. She has a BA in Aboriginal Studies and an MA and PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Adelaide. She has taught short story writing at the University of Adelaide and at the University of Texas at Austin. Rebekah is a Board member of the International Society of the Short Story in English.

Workshop participants, SA Writers Centre members, and anyone interested in writing are also invited to attend a free SA Writers Networking Event on Sunday 3 December 4-5pm. Get away from the desk, share some light refreshments with other writers (including Rebekah!), or come along with questions. Writers of any age and stage welcome. RSVP here.

Venue: Ceduna Community Library, Bergmann Drive, Ceduna
