Writing and Talking Books expired_event - Event is a Draft

Description:

with Kerryn Goldsworthy

Have you ever wanted to write about books you've read, or feel confident discussing your considered opinion about them with others? Are you keen to write reviews for blogs, websites or for publication but haven't known where to begin?

This workshop with writer and respected critic Kerryn Goldsworthy will provide you with the skills to confidently critique and shape your opinion, and show you how to present your professional judgement in a review format.

She will introduce you to the tools, techniques, tips and tricks of professional reviewing that she has learnt over 35 years as a professional book reviewer. And share how many of the skills and techniques can easily be applied to the art and craft of reviewing other cultural forms and experiences as well, including television, theatre, music, and even food.

This workshop is a must for anyone interested in the art of reviewing, whether written or verbal.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Structure a review.
  • Achieve a balance between analysis and judgement.
  • Tailor your review to your readers and to the relevant audience.
  • Write online reviews and why they differ from print.
  • Recognise and meet your responsibilities as a reviewer.

Kerryn Goldsworthy is the author of three books: a collection of short stories, a critical study of the writing of Helen Garner, and a history/travel/memoir book called Adelaide, part of the ‘Cities Series’. She has also published numerous essays, articles, reviews, stories and columns (including on local tourism, for The Adelaide Review). Kerryn taught at Melbourne University for 17 years and has now taught Creative Writing classes and workshops at Melbourne and Adelaide Universities on and off since 1983.
