In this hands on workshop, you’ll spend the morning developing a custom marketing plan for your book, along the way learning tips for marketing essentials such as author bios and book cover copy, creating budgets, and scheduling events. We’ll discuss strategies for how to promote your book without getting overwhelmed and will cover a range of marketing opportunities, with the goal of fitting these into your regularly scheduled life. Using real world examples, you’ll learn how to work with your strengths and how best to connect with your audience of readers.
In the second half of the workshop, we’ll discuss specifically what needs to happen before, during, and after your book launch. With your custom marketing plan in hand, you’ll learn marketing strategies for both online and offline, including website and blog essentials; how to create affordable and effective promotional items, such as bookmarks, notecards, posters, and more; and how to reach out to readers authentically and generously. We’ll also study creative book promotions, including book mailers, book trailers, and special events.

Midge Raymond and John Yunker are cofounders of Ashland Creek Press, a boutique publisher focused on environmental literature. Midge is the author of the short story collection Forgetting English and a novel, My Last Continent (Text Publishing). She worked in publishing in New York before moving to Boston, where she taught communication writing at Boston University for six years. She has published two books for writers, Everyday Writing and Everyday Book Marketing.
John is a novelist and playwright who has worked for several publishing companies and has more than a decade of experience in marketing and design. In addition to working with authors, he has consulted with marketing executives across three continents, including companies such as Google, Panasonic, and FedEx.
