Qn: Poetry Slam Workshop expired_event - Event is a Draft

with Kami McInnes and Manal Younus

Who?   |     What?   |   Where?   |   How?

Part workshop, part slam this engaging afternoon will discover answers for the above vital questions of poetry. Participants leave with an understanding of the history, the rules, examples of contemporary practicing poets (local, national, international) and a list of resources. They are also given the opportunity to workshop a piece of poetry, gaining feedback on both writing and delivery. Suitable for aspiring, emerging, developing writers who read their work, particularly but not limited to those who engage in poetry slams.

This workshop will provide participants with:

  • WHO: an understanding of the history of poetry slams in Australia
  • WHAT: advice on writing, including triggers and techniques and hot performance tips
  • HOW: to craft and present a slam piece
  • WHERE: to find the best resources, websites, and information to continue their writing journey.

Campbell (Kami) McInnes was the winner of the 2010 Single Poet Collection Award at the Poetry Unleashed Festival. He has performed in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle including the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Melbourne Writers Festival. In 2009 and 2011 he represented South Australia at the Australian Poetry Slam finals in Sydney. As a spoken word performer, he has supported national and international musical acts in Adelaide and Sydney. Kami has organised and hosted slams, book launches and readings, as well as chairing and appearing on writing panels both in SA and interstate.

Manal Younus is a two time Australian Poetry Slam finalist and recently appeared on ABC's Q&A program in her role as state finalist of 2016 Young Australian of the Year. While completing a degree in international relations, Manal has also navigated her sense of identity through poetry, entering spoken word competitions and performing her work around the country. Working with other refugees to develop poems that share their stories of persecution, displacement and freedom, Manal encourages others to take pride in their identities and for all Australians to understand and embrace diversity. In 2015, Manal released her first collection of poetry called Reap.

Spoken Word SA has been presenting the South Australian Leg of the National Poetry Slam since 2013. Slam Poetry is a genre that attracts and nurtures young performers, providing a fresh platform for their work to be heard. We have presented workshops, poetry events, regular readings as well as participating in panels, readings and events ourselves. It is this experience, which we share with the poets and participants, offering mentoring to artists as well as skill sharing and performance opportunities.
