Join author Catch Tilly as she gives participants insight on how to write the perfect fight scene.

What’s the experience of facing a sharpened sword? How does chainmail feel and what does it smell like after battle? Does your novice hero have any chance against the evil master? How does a sword fight work? Use real weapons and learn authentic techniques as you explore the world of combat. Practice writing vivid and compelling fights with feedback on your work.

Suitable for anyone who loves fantasy and wants to write a realistic fight scene for page, stage or screen.

Participants will:

  • Learn real facts about real weapons and armour from a professional sword-wielder.
  • See, hear, touch and smell the tools of a medieval warrior.
  • Hear the basic facts every sword-wielder wants to tell every writer.
  • Grasp the rhythm of a fight and how to mirror that in your writing.
  • Learn to find and tell the story of your character’s fight.

This event is presented as part of our Portal: Fantasy Workshop Festival in the Riverland (Sept 9-11). See all events, workshops and updates here!

This workshop is presented by the Writers SA No Limits: Young Regional Writers program, and is aimed at regional writers under 30, however writers all ages and locations are very welcome to attend.

About Catch Tilly

Catch Tilly spends most of her time in imaginary worlds, where she talks to dragons and swings every type of sword imaginable. In real life, she’s disarmed a student in class, played Macduff for Cavan Secure Centre (best fight scene ever), travelled a thousand miles in horse-drawn wagons and written too many plays on zombies.

Catch is the author of YA fantasy novels Shadowalker and Abomination and the contemporary book Otherwise Known As Pig, mentioned in parliament during a discussion on bullying in schools. She’s spent forty years writing and twenty years sword-fighting and would love to share her experience.
