Enter a new world with Riverland's Stuart Watkinson as he guides writers through the process of building and developing their own fantasy worlds.

Who slew the dragon that formed the stars? Where does the wind from the east come from? Who built the stone wall that divides the continent? When building worlds we can be as specific or as broad as we want. But there are some established methods and schools of thought. In this course we’ll be diving into the various styles and types of world-building, ways to implement world-building into your writing, and we’ll even get some inspiration from random tables and dice!

Let’s build a world!

Participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of what world-building is.
  • Learn different approaches to world-building.
  • Use random tables, genorators and other forms of inspiration.
  • Put their worlds into words.
  • Identify pitfalls and things to avoid when crafting your fantasy world.

This event is presented as part of our Portal: Fantasy Workshop Festival in the Riverland (Sept 9-11). See all events, workshops and updates here!

This workshop is presented by the Writers SA No Limits: Young Regional Writers program, and is aimed at regional writers under 30, however writers all ages and locations are very welcome to attend.

About Stuart Watkinson

Stuart is an educator, writer, podcaster, and RPG designer. He writes mind-bending dangerous adventures, with a touch of the apocalypse. When not in the classroom he is writing words or rolling dice. He has a range of published tabletop roleplaying games and supplements for science fiction and fantasy storytelling. At the heart of all of them is strong world-building to help players tell engaging stories.
