Announcing the Stella Sparks campaign!

The Stella Prize announces nonfiction Stella Sparks campaign celebrating nonfiction writing by Australian women

The Stella Prize, Australia’s leading literary organisation celebrating Australian women’s writing, has launched its 2017 awareness and fundraising campaign: nonfiction Stella Sparks.

This year, the Stella Prize is highlighting the impact of nonfiction writing by women on Australian culture and society by encouraging readers to share their ‘nonfiction Stella Spark’ – their favourite work of nonfiction by an Australian woman. A range of high-profile Australian writers, journalists, media personalities, artists and musicians and will share their own Stella Sparks in support of the campaign.

Anyone who loves reading and believes in gender equality is invited to engage in the conversation by sharing their nonfiction Stella Spark – be it a book, essay, article or other piece of nonfiction – and the story of why they chose it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag “#StellaSpark”.

Moreover, to survive and thrive into the future, the Stella Prize needs financial support, and thus supporters are also encouraged to become a Stella Spark Donor by making donations to the Stella Prize. Stella Spark donors will be recognised on the Stella Prize website, and be eligible to receive a goodie bag including a writer’s diary and a book of nonfiction writing by Australian women. Visit the website for more information about donating: http://www.thestellaprize.com.au/sparks.

The nonfiction Stella Sparks campaign will be celebrated at an event on 7 February at Giant Dwarf Theatre in Sydney, at which special guests including 2016 Stella Prize winner Charlotte Wood, 2016 Stella Prize shortlistee Fiona Wright, playwright and star of Black Comedy Nakkiah Lui, and performance artist and poet Candy Royalle will each share a true story of their own. Stella Prize judges Delia Falconer and Ben Law will also announce the 2017 Stella Prize longlist at the event, which will be hosted by Julia Zemiro.

The nonfiction Stella Sparks campaign reaches out to a broad, passionate community of nonfiction readers and book-lovers who share the values of the Stella Prize, and who will create and participate in the vital conversation about gender equality, diversity and cultural change in Australian literature.

Aviva Tuffield, Executive Director of the Stella Prize, says:

“The nonfiction Stella Sparks campaign seeks to recognise and celebrate the powerful cultural contribution of nonfiction writing by Australian women. Support for Australian women writers is at the heart of every initiative undertaken by Stella, including the annual $50,000 prize, the Stella Schools Program, and the Stella Count. We invite all lovers of nonfiction to join the conversation by sharing their nonfiction Stella Spark, and to consider donating to the Stella Prize.”
